Joseph & Julia | Pittsburgh Athletic Association | Oakland

Julia is from Pittsburgh but she met Joseph in Atlanta, so his friend’s and family traveled  from Augusta, Georgia.  You could even say, it was a Georgia wedding in Pittsburgh.  Hopefully our city treated them well?  (Which I want to add that I would love to service Atlanta and Augusta for weddings and portraits.)  I had so much fun at this wedding because the guests were incredibly sweet and kind, much like the Bride and Groom.  In every way, Joseph and Julia are charming people and we ended up dancing into the late night!  My job is so cool, and the way I shoot, I become a good friend to the bride and groom.  I want to shoot wedding as your friend, rather than the guy in “black” over in the corner with camera.

I love the location of their wedding and reception at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association.  The space dripped with style,  charm and character.  It complimented Julia’s elegant taste so nicely and Mike, the official coordinator at Pittsburgh Athletic Association, was a cool and classy guy!  He had everything part of the day flowing like clockwork.  This is a space I definitely recommend and think Oakland is a great destination for Pittsburgh Weddings.

Joseph and Julia did a first look and had the wedding party meet us shortly after.  We actually shot 90% of their photography before the wedding,  allowing them to spend more time with their guests.   I know they will be checking the blog from California this morning before leaving for Tahiti.  Joseph and Julia, thank you for you choosing me, I loved your friends and family and most of all, getting to know you and Joseph!  Here is your preview…

Sometimes my clients book a club DJ for their reception and we love it when they do!  I love to dance and have a blast with my clients.  A lot of photographers split early but if you ask me, the party is just getting started.  Julia booked DJ BILL BARA and he mixed and even scratched slammin tracks which blew the place up!!!  A good DJ will cover the fun stuff, but knows who to blow it up and get it hot when the floor is packed!

Venue: Pittsburgh Athletic Association
Entertainment: DJ BILL BARA

Danielle Crumrine | Pittsburgh Visionary

Danielle is the Director of Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest.  Her vision is to create a healthy, attractive and safe urban forest by inspiring and engaging citizens to maintain, plant and protect trees.  She is also one of my closest friends and has given me several opportunities to photograph her projects which has lead to other opportunities such as shooting for The Sprout Fund. She needed some new environmental portraits taken and asked to me stop by, so I decided to share her with my blog audience.  We started our photo session out back in the tree nursery she developed at “Friends” on 5427 Penn Ave. Danielle plants and maintains trees all over the city of Pittsburgh. She teaches people to become a “Tree Tender“  As a matter of fact, Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest boasts 750 tree tenders in 63 neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh! “It’s cute,” she says “Tree maintenance is sexy!” “Tree tending” is a truly fun and satisfying work. Danielle is also producing Arbor Aid on Friday, October 29th. This fundraiser features over fifty artists who will make art from the city’s fallen trees. If you haven’t heard about it, it’s Friends of the Urban Forest; be sure to check them out and get involved!

Joe & Kelly | Wedding | Upper St. Clair

Happy Friday the 13th!  Kelly is so excited to see these and has been checking from their honeymoon in Jamaica.  Rightfully so, this wedding was stunning.  A few months ago, Joe and Kelly had a beautiful Engagement Session in Addison Pennsylvania.  Now the time had come for their wedding and Kelly had been planning this since she was a teenager.  All her beautiful bride maids were childhood friends and traveled to Pittsburgh to celebrate her marriage. Kelly’s wore a  Sophia Tolli Petra gown that was extremely elegant. Both Kelly and her bridesmaids looked absolutely gorgeous in their gowns.

I loved the colored glass windows in this church, it made for the prettiest back drops.  Kelly was all smiles every time she looked at Joe.  He had nothing but smiles in return.

We had amazing weather, can you believe it was only 79 degrees on August 7th?

Joe and Kelly are so sweet together.  We had this amazing engagement session and picked up right where we left.

We met an awesome DJ, Kevin from Zini Productions who had the place slammin!  Joe convinced the staff to turn off the lights and the placed turned into a night-club.

Joe and Kelly had a firetruck show up for their formal exit… I love this shot of them standing on it.  Joe and Kelly, thank you for booking me.  From your engagement session to your wedding has been incredible!

Shawn & Pam | Observatory Hill | Pittsburgh PA

This shoot was too much fun and the reason why is Pam and Shawn are a very fun and art-loving couple.  When I visited their home, I loved the way Pam decorated and the house was filled with art.  For their engagement session, we knew we wanted something different and most of all, fun!  Pam and Shawn both love astronomy and recently acquired this cool telescope; we knew we had to use it.  The perfect location was Observatory Hill; it is a beautiful park and observatory dating from 1912.  It is located on the north side, and the University of Pitt gives free tours every Thursday and Friday.  Check it out sometime.

Michael & April | Reception Party | Pittsburgh/Verona

Some people you can’t help but have a good time when your with them.  April and Michael are exactly that – a good time to be around!  They are a very cute and happy couple, always smiling and laughing; the three of us just clicked from the minute we first worked together.   April and Michael got married in Punta Cana and had a charming reception for friends and family at the Longue Vue Country Club in Verona, PA.  You may remember their engagement session: Boat Love ?  April and Michael are serious boaters and wanted to snap a few shots on the boat before attending their party.  It was a wee bit scary standing on the edge of dock while it was moving so much.  All I needed was to fall in with all my gear, or worse yet, I was worried someone would fall off the back of the boat, but we had a great driver and got some fun wedding photos to boot,  great idea April!  Here is your preview…

I loved April’s colors of gray and pink.  She had beautiful floral arrangements everywhere!

How amazing is this rainbow?  It meant so much because it rained on April and Michael’s wedding day in the islands, every rainbow makes me think of Bob Marley.

April and Michael booked Mark Tishko Entertainment who rocked the house and brought the pink lighting for the ballroom, a nice touch!  Thank you Michael and April for bringing me along on your special day.  Have fun on your Mediterranean cruise.

OUTER BODY/INNER EXPERIENCES | Wood Street Galleries | Pittsburgh

* This blog post contains animation and may take a few extra minutes to download.  THANK YOU!

Wood Street Galleries continues to bring the best, most memorable, high-tech installation to the Pittsburgh Arts Community.  It is the gem of the Gallery Crawl, which happens 3 times a year in the cultural district of downtown Pittsburgh.  If you have never been to Wood Street Galleries, let this be your inaugural visit.  These installations are brilliant, and the energy they created in people was amazing to witness!  Which makes this show one of the best  I have seen at Wood Street .  Thank you Murray and your staff for making these amazing shows happen!

First up is Canadian Artist Luc Courchesne demonstrating his work called, “Where are you?”  Visitors steer their way through virtual landscapes stretching around them in all directions.  From within an inverted dome where they are provided with an iPhone to navigate.  They experience immersion and invited to play with the scale of things around them.  “Where are you” uses the Pano-scope 360 invented by Courchesne to simplify the authoring and delivery of visual immersive experiences.

Next up is Belgium Artist Lawrence Malstaf with “Nemo Observatorium“ Styrofoam beads are blown around in a big transparent PVC cylinder by 5 strong fans.  Visitors can their place in the armchair at the middle or observe from the outside.  The chair is the “eye of the storm,” its calm and safe.  Spectacular at first site, this installation turns out to mesmerize like a kind of meditation machine.  One can follow the seemingly cyclic patterns, focus on the different layers of 3D pixels.  One could call it a training device, challenging the visitor to stay centered and find peace in a fast changing environment.

This work was fascinating and it was thrilling to watch the people respond to it, seen here is the Artist Lawrence Malstaf inside his creation.

Check out this quick slide-show of the reactions to this amazing installation.

French Artist Airan Kang fashion books out of fiber optics within plastic cases.  Each text is an immaterial presence in light and color that is future realized in the space of imagination.  Kang’s virutal library was created in homage to the books of philosophers, poets and novelists that are sources of inspiration.

Shadow for Heisenberg” by Chicago Artist Jim Campbell. Every time viewers approach the case to appease their curiosity or desire for contemplation, the glass fogs up, leaving the viewers frustrated and unable to see the object of desire.

*Please allow the animation of the dancers to load…

Lastly, British Artist Mike Stokes “Long After Tonight.”  Long after tonight documents a re-creation of a Northern Soul night staged at St Salvador’s Church in Dundee, Scotland – parts of which housed some of the city’s first dance events of this kind during the early 1970’s. Northern Soul is a term used to describe the dislocation of obscure up-tempo African-American soul music to the north of England during the sixties and seventies. ‘Northern’ nights became extremely popular events where fans gathered in discreet communal places and dance halls for all-night dance sessions.

Bill & Jenna | The Downtown Wedding | Pittsburgh, PA

I love learning my clients true personalities, and it has become a goal to capture it in their photos. I’m so excited to create something unique and fun for them. Bill and Jenna are genuine people that treat everyone with gracious respect, whether it’s their family or their wedding vendors.  Simply put, they are very classy people!  All day long, Love was in their face’s, you could see the respect and admiration they have for each other. Did I mention they like to have fun?! Congratulations Bill and Jenna, here is your preview…

Jenna’s dress was a elegant evening gown covered in lace that was stunning when it caught the light.  It truly compliment her personality.

Do you love this church or what?  I had to do some research and find out a little of its history.  Construction of the Epiphany Church began August 10, 1902. The cost for erecting Epiphany Church, rectory and school was $386,016.12. The Church is a red brick Romanesque structure with byzantine details. Edward Stotz served as architect. Taber Sears executed the paintings of Christ and the apostles which dominate the sanctuary.  Plus it has a wonderful bonus, AIR-CONDITIONING!  (more church history here…)

Such a beautiful moment, Jenna breaks down into tears as she nears the alter, her father calmly grips her hand as she see Bill.

I have never seen so many people with camera’s, I love it.  Most people think the photographer doesn’t want guests to take pictures, I am the opposite and encourage it!

Bill & Jenna booked the downtown Marriott for their reception.  It was directly across the street from the church and gave us a little time to play in the city.

It may have felt like a 100 degrees, but this wedding party had fun.  Check out the fella’s Captain Morgan pose.

Bill and Jenna met while on a spring break missions trip to Mexico.  In honor of that, instead of decorating their tables with florals, they made a donation to the Penn State Catholic Campus Ministry.

Jenna named each table and their sweetheart table was called “Ever-After.”  The food was excellent, they served their guests filet mignon.

Bills best man has two giant shots of whiskey brought up during his speech.  Now that is a SHOT!  This wedding was Irish all the way!

Bill and Jenna are so cute together! I love this series of them dancing, best part is, they forgot I was even there.

Bill and Jenna really enjoyed their guests, they floated around the place and made sure everyone was enjoying themselves.  They wanted a final group shot of their families before turning in.  We got a sneak peak of their room as the best man and  maid of honor decorated their suite with a surprise.  Thank you Bill and Jenna for letting us share in your special day.
